Bridging the Gap Between OWL and Relational Databases

Schema statements in OWL are interpreted in a different way from
similar statements in a relational database setting. This can lead
to problems in data-centric applications, where OWL's interpretation
of the statements intended as constraints may be confusing and/or
inappropriate. We propose an extension of OWL that attempts to mimic
the intuition behind integrity constraints in relational databases.
We discuss the algorithms for checking constraint satisfaction for
different types of knowledge bases, and show that, provided the
constraints are satisfied, we can disregard them while answering a
broad range of positive queries.
